An Alm is an alpine mountain meadow for lifestock pasturing during the summer, and the buildings (hut, stables) belonging to it. Some offer food or accomodation for hikers, some are used privately as weekend homes or hunting huts. Many have a dedicated name, derived from the owner or geographical features. Due to the higher elevation, the time of active use is limited to the summer months and the buildings are often closed during the rest of the year. During pastunring lifestock can roam in the whole area freely.
