Wikimedia Hackathon Women Tech Storm

The Women Tech Storm is a small female-only hackathon. It is also open for non-binary people. It will be held in the Netherlands from 10 to 12 May 2018.

It will be an event weekend filled with hacking together with other interested developers. The Hackathon has two targeted groups. One group exists of female developers with some experience programming outside Wikimedia and who would like to learn Wikimedia coding. The other group consists of women who are already acquainted with Wikimedia projects and are interested in learning the coding side of the projects. You can learn how to make a query with SPARQL or learn to master Python.

The Women Tech Storm - part I will be followed by the Wiki Techstorm. This event will be in October/November and is open for all genders.

Wikimedia Netherlands has a longstanding history organising hackathons and GLAM camps. Previous events were held in 2014, 2013, 2012 and 2011).

We plan on having about 5 workshops during the Friday and Saturday and the question to you is: what would you like to learn?

  • Python bot programming assignments
  • Sparqle queries on Wikidata (learn from the masters!)
  • GlamWiki Toolset for images on Commons (there's a backlog with requests from about a year ago on Commons)
  • Building or maintaining apps for mobile phones
  • Working with more 'advanced' tools like VisualFileChanger
  • OpenRefine for analysing and cleaning up data
  • Working with QuickStatements on Wikidata
  • Requesting data from API's to upload to Commons (in batch, for example from Collectie Nederland)
