UUCP

UUCP, short for the Unix-to-Unix Copy Protocol, is an early method of file transfer between long-distance machines (primarily by email). These would be routed by names of machines. For example, a person's UUCP address may be !UCBerkley!System7!Tommy. UUCP was the original protocol for the Usenet. It is still used for batch sharing between newsgroup providers, but for the end-user it was replaced by NNTP.
