Lainchan
Lainchan is a cyberpunk-themed imageboard. The website reflects themes and subjects present in the cult-classic anime Serial Experiments: Lain including technology, dreams, and drugs. The premier board /cyb/ was split into /tech/ and /sec/ because the inclusion of a dedicated cyberpunk board on a cyberpunk website was seen as superfluous.
Lainchan generates a randomized name for each poster in a thread. This is not a username and does not void anonymity. Various words are filtered:
- shit: soykaf
- fuck: fuaark
- banned: derezzed
- bloat: boat
- sucks: is like kicking dead whales down the beach
Lainchan has a video stream, zine called Lainzine, internet radio station and IRC server.
The IRC server is reachable at irc.lainchan.org:6697, is SSL-only and does host cloaking per default. The central discussion channel is #lainchan.
Controversy
Fake end of Lainchan
In mid-2015, Lainchan pretended to go offline. An announcement was made that some users made a Lainchan 2.0. The link for it (now down) redirected to the Filthy Frank video "IT'S JUST A PRANK, BRO".
Moderation
In late 2015, Lainchan moderation revealed themselves. It turned out that nearly everyone on the moderation team were under the age of 20. The reason for revealing themselves was in an effort to get people to buy stickers and donate to the site moderation. This included a live stream with the owner, an underage wannabe /cuteboys/ poster literally whoring himself by jerking off on camera. The former owner of Lainchan, Kalyx was also under the age of 18 (believed to be 14 at the time) and is a major hipster and macfag.
New ownership
After a protracted battle with Nazi trolls and spammers following the acrimonious crashing of 8chan with no survivors, which collaterally resulted in a reorganization of Lainchan and the end of /cyb/, Kalyx sold Lainchan to Appleman1234. The person has continually proven himself to be worse than Kaylix, not knowing common jargon such as the words usergroup, userspace, or even the term systems. Appleman1234 is a hard-working god amongst men who actually puts in coding effort on the site and has made sure we have a functioning streaming service as well as a secondary, self-hosted IRC server for our real-time memeing efforts.
Lainchan at one point split into lainchan.org and lainchan.jp. Lainchan.jp was run by ex-staff members who split after disagreements with Appleman1234. However, seph (owner of .jp) kicked out 3/4ths of the moderators that came from lainchan, modded a bunch of russians from some other site to "show that we trust them", and kept two moderators from systemspace despite them having a "/sr/ systemspace refugees" board, then renamed lainchan.jp to arisuchan.jp.
Site Purge
On the 10th of April, 2017, Lainchan experienced a massive data purge. kalyx wiped the host servers hard drives down to the OS level (apparently "for the lulz"), and all boards and files were lost. Appleman managed to get the site back up and running about six hours after the initial purge, and enabled basic posting on a restored /q/, as well as re-adding /mega/ and /random/ and temporarily opening the #Lainchan room on freenode.
One lainon summed up the events very nicely: "Appleman didn't bother to change credentials on the server's control panel so when he requested a password reset Kalyx got the email instead of him. Realizing he had access to the server's control panel, Kalyx decided to be a dick and erase the server entirely, thinking Appleman could just restore it from back ups. Appleman in a remarkable feat of stupidity kept lainchan's back ups on the same server it was hosted on, so those got nuked at the same time as the rest of the site."
