Questions tagged [pulse]

A pulse in signal processing is a rapid, transient change in the amplitude of a signal from a baseline value to a higher or lower value, followed by a rapid return to the baseline value. There are many examples of a pulse function including: Step/rectangular pulse, impulse/dirac pulse, triangular pulse, sawtooth pulse, sinc pulse, Gaussian pulse, etc.

Can anybody identify this component (SPRAGUE 663044-4) on this vintage electronic?

I am repairing a vintage Seeburg/Gulbransen 'Select-a-Rhythm' drum machine from 1967, the kind you would sit on top of your organ and play along with. I am trying to distinguish what this component could be, it basically looks like an old capacitor…

Vintage germanium transistors: How does this metronome oscillator work?

I'm trying to restore and learn from a simple metronome assembled by my uncle in the 60's. It has a nice sounding beat and used to work until very recently — although unstable. I've made a schematic from tracing the board tracks…

Big discrepancy between theoretical and actual power through my pulse generator

I am trying to acquire some skills about pulse generation, but that's not easy. I've tried to derive the power dissipated by the input resistor in my pulse generator, but it turns out to be much lesser than the actual power (if I am correct). Where…

Pulse withstanding capability of standard resistors

How much pulse power does a standard (i. e. not further specified) resistor withstand? Consider for example a MOSFET and a 33R resistor that is connected to its gate. If the switching voltage would be 10 V, the resistor sees up to 3 W every time…

Use of LED driven over-current in a strobe lamp

I'd like a strobe lamp using RGB LEDs as it's light source. I want to pulse the LEDs with very short duration pulses (ideally microseconds or less) at around 100 Hz. The total on time for the LEDs per second is likely to be less than 1/1000 of a…

Rising edge pulse detector from logic gates

The circuits I describe are entirely made of 7400 series logic gates (7402, 7404 and 7408 ic). I'm trying to build a rising (positive) edge pulse detector using logic gates. The following circuit should work in theory: (see this) I do not expect…

Why do RC applications use such a small PWM duty cycle?

I know that RC applications, such as a drone, use PWM signals to drive the motors. This PWM signal is mostly 50 Hz (0.02 s). The pulse itself varies from 1 ms to 2 ms. So a 1 ms pulse corresponds with a minimum motor rotation and a 2 ms pulse with a…

Why pulsed drain current is higher than continuous drain current in MOSFETs?

Why is pulsed drain current higher than continuous drain current in MOSFETs? In MOSFET data-sheets, pulsed drain current is much higher than (by at least 2x) continuous drain current. What is the reason behind this?

Resistor power rating for short pulses

Just wondering how to treat a resistor power rating if the resistor is only getting current passed through it for 1us or less? Is it reasonable to exceed the power rating significantly (say 10x) for such short pulses or unwise?
