Reasons not to use a 741 op-amp?
Simple enough question. Why not use a 741 op-amp in a target circuit or anyone's target circuit? What are the reasons not to use it? What might be the reasons to still choose this part?

PCI obsolescence - IEEE1284 (EPP,ECP,LPT) printer port ASIC
I have a product in volume manufacture where the embedded CPU is now obsolete.
I have to replace that CPU with a lower cost alternative. For political (and practical) reasons I don't have a choice which CPU to use.
The original CPU had a companion…

LDR component obsolescence
The light dependent resistor (LDR) that I use in MintyTime, Excelitas Tech VT93N2, has been discontinued by the manufacturer. I'm having trouble finding a comparably priced (e.g. < $0.50 @ 100+) replacement part. It's been suggested to me that I…

Are MESFET transistors still used in the industry?
I was looking for mesfet transistors earlier, because I need some for experiments due to their relatively simple physical structure.
I can't find any of these on rs, farnell and mouser !
So I was wondering if this kind of transistors was still used…

Why are old digital ICs families still so "popular"?
Why is it so? The basic 74 series, the 4000, are such poor ICs compared to the newest families (by the 74: AUC, AUP, ALVC...), which only have advantages over the oldest one: lower power consumption, lower propagation delay...

Which component to use for a few GBytes of memory available for several years?
I am working on a project which is supposed to be built in small quantities (less than 50 units/year), but will probably be sold for 10 or 15 years. I am at the stage where I look at the non volatile memory, and we plan to use something like…

1N34 / 1N270 obsolete
When I search for 1N34 on Mouser I get nothing, and when I search for 1N270 diode I only find a note that it is obsolete. What is now used in place of this part?
I am using Ronald Quan's book on building AM radios and he specifies it in several…

Substituting an outdated FPGA with another one from the same family
I have a board with an Altera EPF10K30RC240-4N. It has an EPC1 next to it, which I found is the "Configuration EPROM". I assume this stores the "program"?
The FPGA is not functioning and appears to have an internal short. The device has long been…

Clock divide by 5 - All ICs obsolete?
I've got an obsolete part in a design (SY100S839VZG) that is being used to take a single 100MHz clk and divide it down into two PECL p/n pairs.
For the life of me, I cannot seem to find a single clock divider out there that supports /5 that isn't…

Specs for obsolete relay OEG OL-C-212H12VDC
I've extracted a relay labeled OEG OL-C-212H12VDC from an early 90s Technics amplifier whose service manual refers to as RSY0009-0. It has an additional line indicating 9142 T. Its coil is busted, thus I cannot measure its resistance. From the…

Alternative IC mounting options
I have a nice bunch of TI LDC0851 inductive proximity switches and would like to use them for some anti-tamper experimentation, but their connection is 3x3mm WSON-8, which as far as eBay, Digi-Key, Mouser, TI, specialist obsolete product firms and…

Is it easy to predict or get notified about obsolescence for DIP ICs?
The question here might seem a bit tangent for this Stack Exchange but here it goes.
In the product development phase, one of the important factors under consideration is the availability of selected components. If the plan is to sell a particular…

Good replacement for 74HC573N Octal Trans D-Type Latch?
