Insulated-gate bipolar transistor, voltage-driven power transistor with fast switching times

IGBTs have fast switching times, and are not spec'd for operation in an analog region. For these reasons, they are typically used in switching applications, such as switched-mode power supplies and PWM motor drives. They switch slower than FETs, and thus have higher switching losses. But IGBTs are available in higher voltage ranges than FETs, making them the only solution for many applications.

IGBT vs. Power MOSFET for switching applications. Where to draw the line?

For lower breakdown voltages, a power MOSFET is clearly the device to go for, in view of its higher efficiency, higher commutation speed and lower price. Where should the line be drawn, upwards of which IGBTs take over as the preferable solution?…

What is the difference between driving a MOSFET gate and an IGBT gate?

Can I use an suitable IGBT gate driver for driving the MOSFET, and vice versa? Which parameters (threshold, plateau, and turn on voltage ratings, gate capacitance, etc) must be the same for this compatibility? What are the essential differences…

IGBT ratings, I don't understand how this is possible

I found the IXGX400N30A3 at Digikey. The datasheet says the device is rated for 400A @ 25C, 1200A @ 25C for 1ms, with a voltage rating of 300V and PD of 1000W. Really? This TO-264 package can control 400A of current all day long? I can short out…

Need help understanding and interpreting IGBT datasheets

When it comes to motor control, I understand that we have the option of using discrete MOSFETs or IGBTs. Also, there are some products in the market where 6 IGBTs are placed in one single package, such as GB25XF120K. (Here's another example part,…
