Questions tagged [header]

A Header is a physical connector on a pcb, typically with multiple pins or sockets arranged in a 0.1" (2.54mm), 0.05" (1.27mm), 1mm or 0.5mm grid, called the "pitch" of the header.

A Header is a physical connector on a pcb, typically with multiple pins or sockets arranged in a 0.1" (2.54mm), 0.05" (1.27mm), 1mm or 0.5mm grid, called the "pitch" of the header. Other, more exotic grid pitches exist, either for legacy reasons, proprietary differentiation or for miniaturization.

Headers are commonly single or double row, though more rows are possible too.

Headers can consist of male pins or female sockets, rectangular or rounded.

Wire broke off and stuck in a header

I'm working with an Arduino, and one of the stripped portions of the wire broke off at some point and managed to get pretty wedged into the 5V pin slot. Obviously, this wouldn't matter as much for a GPIO pin, but I sort of need to use the +5V…

Ideas to stack multiple PCBs on top of each other?

My design has a number of boards stacked on top of each other. I would like to connect signals across the boards. The boards all need the same 10 signals running through them (all boards from top to bottom), so that simplifies it a bit. What could…

Conductive object to raise 6mm height off PCB

I am designing a PCB where I expect to have a certain part assembled at the edge of each board (blue in the picture below). However, this part needs to be at connected/soldered at a height of about 6 mm above my PCB. Therefore, I'm considering using…

Pad hole size for 0.1" Male Headers

I created an Eagle part that has several holes to solder 0.1" pitched break away male headers to, such as the one below. However the pad has a hole thats too narrow for the header! What drill size should be used? I used the default of 0.03149606

Square vs Round pad

I'm curious why PCBs have one square pad in row for 0.1" headers. What is purpose of putting one square pad? What it indicates? Can you push more amps through square pad than round?

Making a schematic in KiCad; how to represent connections from another circuit board?

I'm using KiCad to design a circuit for my latest project. This board includes a number of transistors whose bases are connected to off-board signals. What's the proper way to represent this, so when I build the netlist and PCB, these off-board…

What part is like a male header with long pins on both sides?

What is the part in the picture below? It's like a male header, but with long pins on both sides. I've got some temperature probes I've built that end in female connectors and I'd like to use something similar to use the probes with a breadboard.…

Part number for this Molex 4 pin wire-to-board connector (or similar: Foxconn, Wieson, Tyco, etc)

I'm having a really hard time finding the correct PN for a 4 pin header, used with PWM fans. The header I'm looking for is a 4 pin one, similar to the Molex 47053-1000, but a right angle one. I've already spent a couple of hours on Digikey and the…

Standard length of male header pins

I'm shopping for some bulk male header pins and noticed a lot of options for the contact length column. I know 1" is a longer pin than I'm used to and 0.1" is too short, but is there a standard length for these parts, or a fairly standard range of…

What is this Lenovo 4-pin fan header?

I have a Lenovo p620 machine and I'm trying to swap out the terribly loud fans with Noctua PWM fans. The problem is the 2 chassis fans are using a weird 4-pin connector where the ridges are on the far sides. See pictures. What are these called and…

How much current can a 0.1" pitch pin header pass?

I'm curious how much current it is safe to pass through a 0.1" pitch pin header. I'm sure it will depend on the gauge and stranding of the wire attached to it as well, but assuming that is not the limiting factor how much could be safely passed?

How are headers soldered in PCB assembly?
