Charge Coupled Device - a series of MOS capacitors with over lapping electrodes that form depletion regions in a Si substrate that when operated in sequence form a bucket brigade device. Originally developed for sampled analog signal processing, they primary saw their hey day as Image sensor devices. Usually referred to in their image sensor capacity.

How do I make use of a scrapped CCD sensor from a scanner?
I obtained an old scanner with no power adapter. I wired it up to something with a compatible adapter, but apparently this particular scanner is very tied to it's power supply(even though it's suppose to be regular 12V DC). There were numerous…

Noisy signals with 2-layer PCB - What's wrong with my design?
For my master's thesis in computer science, I need to read out a TCD1304AP linear CCD sensor. A STM32 microcontroller with the circuit laid out on a breadboard gets the job done, but in order to make my project more portable, I designed and ordered…

Difference between Buried Photodiode and Pinned Photodiode
What is the difference between Buried Photodiode and Pinned Photodiode?
I understand that the P+/N/P structure where the P+ and P layers have the same potential is the Pinned Photodiode.
So what is the buried Photodiode?

What's the difference between a thermal imaging sensor and an infrared CCD?
I was always under the impression that thermal radiation is essentially infrared energy, so what's the difference between a full thermal imaging camera (e.g. an FLIR) and a standard infrared CCD chip? Surely the latter should function as the former?…

Why is 30MHz Clock signal distorted on oscilloscope?
I'm trying to probe a 30MHz clock signal, coming from an FPGA and routed to a CCD sensor.
There are no other components, other than connectors, between source/destination.
When I probe this signal with my oscilloscope, I get a distorted waveform…

Signal averaging CCD
I'm thinking about signal to noise ratio of CCDs and I hope this is the right location to post my question. The Hamamatsu Learning Center seems to be a good starting point to learn about CCDs. I learned the SNR is proportional to the square root of…

Charge transfer in CCD
I have a basic doubt about charge transfer between pixels of a CCD. Let's consider this animation (picture taken from wikipedia):
A precise time sequence of applied voltages between gates and bulk allows to move the charge between a pixel…

What component most limits a camera's frame rate?
I have a quick question here when I started wondering how they made slo-mo cameras: What is the part that most limits frame rates in average smartphone cameras? Is it the CCD chip, or a component in the phone that stores the image that limits the…

High-Sensitivity, Low-Latency Imaging Sensor
This might be a bit of a long shot for this venue, but: I'm looking into sensors for a scientific imaging application where the key is excellent sensitivity (quantum efficiency and noise performance) combined with low readout latency.
I don't need a…

Convert counts CCD output to irradiance units
I'm performing some tests with a spectrometer (a model similar to this one but more recent) equipped with a CCD. I can only output to counts, not W/(m^2*nm) (ie: irradiance units) which is what actually I need.
Is there a way to convert from a CCD…

Why are CCD images better than CMOS?
I read that CMOS image sensor technology was discovered first but then they had more noise and thus once CCD was invented, CCD got popular because of better image quality.
After decades, now we use CMOS due to its lower power consumption, speed,…
